The Press and the Debates

Our press corps still is not up to the task on the presidential debates.  A few examples:

When Trump invokes Bill Clinton's transgressions to deflect questions on his statements, the moderators should respond "you aren't running against Bill Clinton."

When a policy question is posed by Anderson or Martha, pull the candidate back to a clear answer, instead of allowing the continental drift to unrelated issues.

What after all do we know about Trump's plans on many key issues ?  Hillary at least makes a serious attempt to answer with specifics.

And after the debates, the networks should be required to publish a disclaimer:  "if you watched the debates, don't bother tuning in for the commentary, because all we're going to do is repeat what you just saw and then speculate on the overall impact on voters"

We have serious issues and our TV journalists are not helping us enough to sort them out.  The analysis they claim to do after a debate falls flat, and is rarely a disciplined assessment of what has been said by the candidates - more importantly, what has not.
